Ararat housing development a step closer

A multi-million-dollar housing project in Ararat is edging closer to its development phase after municipal leaders gave the green light to a planning process.

Ararat councillors unanimously agreed to approve the process for Green Hill Lake Estate project, a plan 16 years in the making, at a council meeting last night.

Council chief executive Tim Harrison said the council approval for the project represented a step closer to meeting a ‘desperate’ need for housing in the region.

“This means that we can then move forward to unlock those lots of land our community so desperately needs as well as create jobs around construction and also create a better future for Ararat,” he said.

“Its really nice to be in a position where we can move this in a space where it can begin and reap rewards for developers and community.

“This is probably 15 years overdue.”

An Ararat development group including Max Perovich, Andrew Eastick and Mark Damman is behind the Greenhill Lake Estate, on Ararat’s eastern fringe and including 158 parcels of land ranging from 600 to 10,000 square metres.

Councillor Gwenda Allgood said she was saddened the project had taken so long to get to the planning stage.

“I can’t believe for 16 years people have had this dream and it really disappoints me it has taken that long – I thank the chief executive and staff for getting this up and running,” she said.

“As we keep hearing, more and more people want to move out to this area. It’s got beautiful views, so congratulations to these people who have been hanging out and spending money on this project.”
