LETTER: Day to celebrate

SIR, – The Australia Day theme this year – Reflect. Respect. Celebrate – encourages us to take this opportunity to reflect on our history, to respect the stories of others and to celebrate our nation, its achievements and, most of all, our people.

The story of Australia begins 60,000 years ago, with new chapters being written every day – we are all part of the story, from the Gunditj Mirring, Eastern Maar, Martang, Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagalk peoples who have been here for many thousands of years, to those whose families go back generations and those who have come from all corners of the globe to call our wonderful country home.

No matter where our personal stories began, Australia Day is for all Australians and it is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on and celebrate what it means to be an Australian.

In what has been an extraordinarily difficult 12 months, the strength and support of our local communities has never been more important.

Whether it be by attending a public event or simply getting together with family and friends to put a snag on the barbie, I hope everyone enjoys their Australia Day.
