EARLIER: The village of Great Western will again come alive for the Australia Day weekend, with a range of activities to cater for residents and visitors alike.
Ahead of Sunday’s popular Seppelt Great Western Cup day, the town will host a Show and Shine Street Party on Saturday.
Money raised via the street party, created by Great Western Future Committee, will be used to improve town facilities.
Committee member and Great Western Hotel publican Bruce Ahchow said the event continued to go from strength to strength.
“This event started four years ago after a car club visited the hotel and the event has just grown from there,” he said.
The Great Western event is quickly becoming a favourite for car, truck and motorbike enthusiasts.
“Last year we introduced a ‘truck’ section and local Mick Best organised some of Lindsay Fox’s private collection of trucks here for the event,” Mr Ahchow said.
“They were very popular. For half a century the Linfox trucks have been going up and down the Western Highway through Great Western and we were very excited to have some of the fully restored trucks on display.
“Mick will again bring some trucks from the Linfox collection, so come along and see which of these magnificently restored trucks he selects.”
Entry to the show and shine is free with categories including best truck; best classic car, pre 1995; best vintage car, pre-1970; best classic motorcycle, pre-1995; best sport motorcycle; best original – unrestored – vehicle; and people’s choice.
Trophy vendor, Pyke’s Pets and Cycles, has added an additional category – best hot rod – as a show of support.
“Of course, we will be following all the COVID-safe guidelines and as much as possible we will have kids activities and lots of fun for everyone,” Mr Ahchow said.
“Ararat SES will have a display of its vehicles and hopes to raise interest from potential volunteers.”
The action starts at 11am, with road closure and marshalling from 10am and judging and presentations at 2pm.
The road will reopen at 4pm.
Entry for show and shine spectators is also free. People can visit www.destinationgreatwestern.com.au for more information.
