Assistance for Wimmera TAFE students

A Wimmera university will provide weekly financial assistance for its TAFE students feeling the effects of COVID-19.

Federation University announced TAFE students experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic could receive up to $300 a week for two weeks.

Students who have had their hours of employment reduced as a result of COVID-19 or are unable to work due to self-isolation and have limited or no provision of personal or annual leave are eligible for the two weekly payments.

Federation University vice-chancellor Helen Bartlett said financial support would ensure students had a better chance of completing their studies through the pandemic.

“We know many of our TAFE students are feeling the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic like so many others in the community,” she said.

“Now, more than ever, we need to support our students and this package will help them continue their studies during these difficult times.”

TAFE students living in rural areas with limited internet services will also be able to access a one-off payment of up to $100 to boost their internet access or data limit.

The university is reminding students who might be struggling with online learning the cut-off date to withdraw from a program without fees has been extended to July 1.

The due date for tuition fees for students who are in fee-paying certificate-level programs has been extended to June 30. For Diploma or Advanced Diploma students, the census date has been extended to July 1.

More computers will also be made available for students to borrow from the Wimmera campus library.

Study spaces that comply with social distancing and hygiene measures have also been opened up at the library, where students can book computer time for their studies. In addition to this, Federation University is also providing fee extensions.
