Athletes in spotlight

The Wimmera’s top young athletic talent is in the spotlight at two national-level meets this week.

Horsham Little Athletics Centre’s Jack Sawyer competed in two events at the Australian Little Athletics Championships on Monday and Tuesday, while Horsham athletes Asha Meek and Jett Hill are preparing for this weekend’s Australian Athletics Junior Championships in Brisbane.

Sawyer was a member of the Victorian boys under-13 sprint medley relay team that finished third on Monday.

The sprint medley relay consists of individual legs of 100, 200, 300 and 400 metres, with Sawyer running the final 400m leg for Victoria.

The team claimed bronze, with Sawyer receiving the relay baton more than seven seconds behind the winning Queensland team and four seconds behind silver medalist New South Wales.

While he ran a strong final leg for Victoria, he was unable to make up ground on the race leaders.

Yesterday afternoon was Sawyer’s sole individual event – the under-13 boys 400m.

Running in the third heat, Sawyer went out strongly but was unable to sustain the pace, ultimately finishing sixth in the fastest heat of the day.

Sawyer’s Horsham Little Athletics Centre clubmate Jett Hill will be in action this weekend at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships, where he is slated to compete in the under-15 800m event on Sunday.

Meek, who trains with Ballarat’s Eureka Athletics Club and Stawell Little Athletics Centre, will commence her under-17 heptathlon on Saturday, with the first event at 10.15am.
