Brett Hosking endorsed for Nationals seat, VFF role ends

Victorian Farmers Federation president Brett Hosking has been endorsed as the Nationals candidate for Murray Plains, requiring vice-president Peter Star to temporarily step into the top role.

VFF Constitution rules require Mr Hosking to step aside from his duties as president until the date of the relevant poll.

Mr Star will assume the responsibilities of president in an acting capacity until incoming president Ryan Milgate, a Minyip farmer, officially begins in the role on June 2, following the 2026 VFF Conference.

VFF is encouraging people to attend the conference to farewell those passing the baton and welcome all new incoming office-bearers.

Farmers, industry leaders and regional stakeholders from across Victoria are set to converge in Ballarat for the June 1 and 2 conference.

The event will bring together voices from across the agricultural sector to discuss the future of farming, policy and innovation.

Prior to stepping down, Mr Hosking said the event would set the tone for a critical remainder of the year.

“As we get ready to head to the polls later this year, our industry is facing increasing pressure from rising costs amidst the fuel and fertiliser crisis and the ongoing battle to protect our farmland. This is our chance to get together as an industry and nail our message,” he said.

Early-bird ticket options are on sale now until tomorrow, including a young farmer special for those aged 35 and younger, costing $100.
