SUCCESS: A Bubbles and Beats night at Nhill not only opened doors for a celebration of women, but raised money to support women and children fleeing family violence. Pictured are organisers, from left, Katherine Colbert, Emma Beer and Angela Stewart.

Bubbles and beats event a win for Nhill community

A social get-together for women in the Wimmera is having a lasting impact on the community.

Three friends joined forces earlier this year to organise an event in Nhill called Bubbles and Beats, providing a social outlet for women while also raising funds for a good cause.

They have now donated more than $5600 to Grampians Community Health to provide supplies at the Grampians Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect Centre in Nhill to support women and children fleeing family violence.

The friends, Emma Beer, Angela Stewart and Kathrine Colbert, all from Nhill, hope to run Bubbles and Beats again next year after the huge success of their inaugural event.

About 180 women attended the event at the Nhill Community Centre in February – almost double initial expectations – and a raffle was another fundraising success.

Ms Beer said they aimed to create a fun night out for women to connect, have a good time and to champion a charity that supports women.

She said the idea originated from friends talking about the need for a local event specifically for women.

“We’re just three friends who wanted to organise an event with live music, food and drinks,” she said.

“Everyone danced and talked and laughed and had a really good time. All the feedback has been really positive.

“A lot of people came from Nhill, but there were buses from Horsham and Dimboola, with people also attending from surrounding towns. It was about social connection and empowering women to have a good time.”

Ms Beer said while hosting the event next year was not confirmed, it was a possibility.

“It was the first time we’d held something like that and we were aiming to sell 100 tickets, but it nearly doubled our expectations,” she said.

Grampians Community Health community services general manager Faith Hardman said GCH was incredibly grateful for the generous donation.

“The money will be used to ensure we have essential supplies in the Nhill office for children and mothers fleeing violence and some toys for the office for when women need to visit with children for appointments,” she said.
