Burras on the board before league bye

Reigning Wimmera league senior women’s football premier Minyip-Murtoa notched its first victory for 2026 at the weekend by defeating new side Natimuk United at Natimuk Showgrounds.

A low-scoring first quarter saw both sides kick a solitary score – one behind for the Rams and one goal for the visiting Burras.

But in the second quarter a gap between the teams began to open, with Minyip-Murtoa adding 1.2 while the Rams kicked three behinds.

The game was still up for grabs at three quarter time, with the Burras’ lead shrinking to nine points in the third term, but the reigning premiers came home with a wet sail in the last quarter to boot four goals to one and claim a 7.10 (52) to 2.7 (19) win.

Best afield for Minyip-Murtoa was defender Abby Weir, with midfielder Rory Starick kicking three goals in another starring role.

Other top performers for the Burras were Claudia Griffiths, who kicked two goals from a wing, and onballer Meg Alsop.

The Rams’ best included Emma van Egmond, Kim Parker and Jacqui Altus, with Kellsie Turner and vice-captain Elle Treloar each kicking single goals. The competition will have a week off during the King’s Birthday long weekend, with all three teams having played each other once.

Laharum tops the ladder at 2-0 and with a percentage of 434.48, while the Burras’ win on Sunday moved them to 1-1 with a percentage of 155.77.

Natimuk United is yet to win, with a percentage of 13.1.

Play resumes on Sunday, June 14, with Laharum hosting Minyip-Murtoa at Cameron Oval.

Juniors

The under-15.5 girls were also in action on Sunday, with Horsham defeating a combined team of Horsham and Minyip-Murtoa by 38 points.

The Demons dominated proceedings early, kicking 9.5 to two behinds in the first half, but a strong third quarter by the Burra-Demons saw them kick four goals to none to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

The final score was Horsham 11.9 (75) defeating the Burra-Demons 5.7 (37), with Indigo Pope booting six goals for the victors and Chloe Stockdale and Mila Payne playing strongly.
