Celebration of elders at Nhill

A celebration of elders was hosted by Nhill’s Karen community at the weekend, highlighting the appreciation and respect younger generations hold for them.

Nan Da San said the Celebration of Paying Respect to Elders was in its 16th year.

“The day is to respect our seniors, and today, particularly, we wanted to have more local people because  they welcomed us into the community and we want to show them we appreciate that,” she said.

“It’s usually a new year event where family comes back together and pay respects to their parents, their grandparents, and just to show that everything they’ve done, we appreciate.”

Now Hindmarsh Shire Council’s youth and community wellbeing officer, Nan Da San said she moved to Australia when she was six years old.

“I then moved to Nhill when I was 11,” she said.

“I basically grew up here, then moved away but didn’t like it, so I came back.”

The celebration also included traditional food, activities and performances.
