Clubbers rising in Grampians cricket

Round one of Grampians Cricket Association saw Youth Club lay claim to early premiership favouritism by defeating defending premier Swifts-Great Western.

After being sent in, the Combine finished its 40 overs 6-164 on a wicket that played excellently for its first use.

After an opening stand of 62 between skipper Sam Cocks, 40, and James Devery, 24, the rest of the innings was centred around Travis Nicholson, 50 not out.

The only multiple wicket taker for the Clubbers was Jarrod Illig, with 2-22 from his eight overs.

The Clubbers’ innings started poorly, with Trent Homden and Angus Barham dismissed cheaply.

At one stage they were 2-14, but a 98-run partnership between Nic Baird, 75, and Kobie Stewart, 41 not out, put the Clubbers on the path to victory.

The Combine was a bit light on in the bowling department, allowing the Clubbers to cruise to a comfortable win with wickets in the shed.

Illig added to his two wickets with a 44 not out.

At Halls Gap, showers prevented a result.

Winning the toss and batting, Chalambar finished on 5-218.

Details of that innings were not lodged, but the Gappers’ Riley Thomas finished with an impressive 4-47 from his spell.

The Gappers’ turn at the wicket yielded 3-89, with Joe Martin on 33 when rain halted play.

In Ararat, St Andrews, at home to Pomonal, recorded a comfortable win in a low-scoring match, which would suggest the grass was long.

Taking the advantage of winning the toss, the Saints posted 7-126, the main contributor being Ned Bohner with 32.

The Tigers replied with a meager 9-59, the Saints’ Tom Mills being their best bowler with 4-7 from eight overs, including five maidens.

This week’s round is also a one-day fixture, with the winners appearing to be obvious, but as cricket is such a fickle game nothing would surprise.

The main attraction will be the Chalambar versus St Andrews match at Gordon Street Oval in Ararat.

St Andrews will start favourite after a convincing win over Pomonal, while Chalmbar, although not actually winning, had the best of Halls Gap, before the rain came.

Pomonal will host Youth Club and the Clubbers will fancy themselves after their good win against the Combine, with solid innings from captain Baird, Stewart, and Illig, and should be able to post a winning score.

The Tigers will be looking for all-round improvement, especially from their batsmen.

Swifts-Great Western returns to Central Park, this time to take on Halls Gap.

It has been a long time since the Gappers have been in the top four and the Combine out of it.

The Combine will look to the return of Matt Heffer to strengthen its bowling.

The Gappers’ batting showed promise against Chalambar but their bowlers need to tighten up against the Combine’s batting, which, with Travis Nicholson and Sam Cocks showing early season form, has the capacity to put the match beyond the Gappers.
