Stawell-based jockey Linda Meech had a day out at the Sheep Hills Cup at Warracknabeal on Saturday, posting three wins including the $30,000 feature race.

Meech guided seven-year-old gelding Tykemison to victory by three quarters of a length in the 2000m cup race, edging out Nicoffhome and Dartboard, with pre-race favourite Aristonous finishing fifth.

Tykemison settled near the rear of the 10-horse field for much of the running and was eighth at both the 800m and 400m marks.

But the gelding found a lane along the rail upon turning for home, charging up the inside in the final 200 metres to overtake leader Nicoffhome about 70 metres before the line.

It was the second of two wins for Meech, who also took out the Bentley Group Maiden Plate
in race one aboard five-year-old gelding Habitual.

Meech finished with a third triumph in the last of the afternoon’s seven races – the Taylors Palace Hotel After The Last Handicap – guiding seven-year-old gelding Surfy Pete, trained by Horsham’s Paul Preusker, to a one-length victory.

Warracknabeal Racing Club chairman Mark Phelan said pleasant weather had helped draw a healthy crowd.

“It was a beautiful day, so we had probably between 300 and 350 people there,” he said.

“It all went well. Everything ran right and went smoothly.”

In addition to the on-track action, the cup featured live music, a fashions-on-the-field competition, food and drinks, and children’s entertainment.

The club’s next major meeting is the Warracknabeal Cup, scheduled for March 27 next year.
