Evans family complete Pier to Pub with a difference

Wimmera families continued their tradition of participating in Lorne’s annual Pier to Pub – but with a difference this year.

Because of COVID-19, Pier to Pub organisers hosted a virtual event for 2021.

Penny and Alan Penfold of Horsham, along with Cameron Evans and his daughter Mackense of Ararat, decided to swim the 1200-metre event in the Wimmera River.

They started at the Drummond Street boat ramp, swimming 600 metres upstream and then back, completing the swim in about 25 minutes.

This was Mackense’s first Pier to Pub and her father’s 12th.

The Penfolds have both completed six events.

Family and friends cheered along their efforts in the river, walking along the bank.

The Wimmera participants agreed it was ‘beautiful’ swimming in the Wimmera River, but they hoped to be back at Lorne for the event next year.
