Final call to shape Ararat's future

Ararat Rural City Council officials are calling for community members to submit feedback on four key documents outlining a strategic direction for the municipality before submissions close on Friday.

Residents have a chance to provide their thoughts on the council’s draft Community Vision 2035, Council Plan 2025-2029, Financial Plan 2025-2035, and Revenue and Rating Plan 2025-2029.

The final drafts of all four documents, together with a draft budget for the 2025-26 financial year, will be presented at the council’s June 24 meeting.

The Community Vision 2035 outlines aspirations for the Ararat region across the next 10 years, while the council plan serves as a strategic guide for the next four years, outlining steps the council plans to take to achieve long-term goals defined in the community vision.

Mayor Jo Armstrong said the Financial Plan provided a 10-year projection for how the actions of the Council Plan 2025-2029 could be funded to achieve the Community Vision 2035, while the Rating and Revenue Plan 2025-2029 would determine the most appropriate revenue and rating strategy through which the council could finance the objectives of its council plan.

“Your voice shapes the future of our community – so don’t be a silent stakeholder,” Cr Armstrong said.

“You can ensure these essential documents are truly relevant and accurately reflect the needs of our community by submitting your feedback before Friday.”

The draft budget for the financial year ahead is also open for feedback after being the subject of a series of community engagement sessions across the municipality.

Among the budget’s key initiatives are $1.49-million for the Ararat Pony Club; $399,000 for a bicycle network upgrade; $1-million for Buangor-Ben Nevis Road renewal; $148,000 for a Pomonal Hall power upgrade; $60,000 for repairs to Buangor’s Cobb and Co; and $683,000 for Woorndoo-Streatham Road.

“Decisions made in the budget impact every one of us,” Cr Armstrong said.

“This is your chance to directly influence council’s priorities, and its decisions on how public funds are spent.

“Take an active role in your community’s development and have your say.”

Residents can submit feedback on all documents via the Engage Ararat website at engage.ararat.vic.gov.au, via email at council@ararat.vic.gov.au, or by post by mailing PO Box 246, Ararat.
