Fun focus at Horsham German Fest

Horsham Agricultural Society members are encouraging people to embrace ‘Oktoberfest in November’ with a one-day event celebrating live music and traditional German beer and food.

After taking on management of Horsham German Fest last year, the society is again revamping the event for November 9 celebrations.

Festival director Andrea Cross said this year’s event, at Horsham Showground’s Maydale Reserve from 3pm to 11pm, would feature a jam-packed program and social atmosphere.

She said she hoped it would be another date on the Horsham social calendar that demonstrated the city ‘has it all’.

“We revamped the festival last year and we’re changing it up again. It’s very exciting,” she said.

“We’ll have live acoustic music on the green and when it gets dark we’ll open up the beer hall where there will be a DJ.

“There’s nothing better than a little bit of sunshine, a little bit of beer, some live music and activities, all with a view of the Wimmera River.

“Oktoberfest in November is coming to Horsham – it’s time to get your tickets and your outfits ready.”

Along with the event’s best-dressed German party girl and guy competition, patrons will also have a chance to participate in beer stein races and stein-holding competitions.

Mrs Cross said a new paint and wine session would also make an appearance on the program, as well as a Mr Potato Head-making competition.

“Children do activities like making Mr Potato Head at similar events all the time. It’s about time the adults can have some fun and get creative too, and we’ll probably have a cash prize for the best creation,” she said.

“We’re also working on bringing in an artist for a paint and wine session, which we’ll call ‘a brush with beers and bubbles’ and have in the beer hall. It’s an event that’s all the rage around the world at the moment, where you have a drink in one hand and a paint brush in the other and follow along with a painting tutorial, letting the creative juices flow.”

Mrs Cross said the event’s food menu had been updated to offer more variety to patrons, with plans to bring pork knuckles, schnitzels and pretzels as well as other food trucks to the party.

She said the society had also added an extra German ‘bier’ to  last year’s drinks list, which includes Erdinger, Gralsburg and Becks beers among others.

“Last year we only had four German beers, but this year there will be five beers available. It’s a chance to try something new. Even beer lovers or connoisseurs will be able to try something different,” she said.

Mrs Cross said while there would be plenty of activities to choose from, the event was also about offering Wimmera people a relaxed and social day out.

“Sometimes people just want to get together with their friends and have a good day out, and that is what this is,” she said.

People can buy tickets online for $20 at www.trybooking.com, or for $25 on the day.
