Honour for language teacher

Horsham’s Ss Michael and John’s Primary School Indonesian language teacher Ally Brennan won recognition for her work with children in additional language programs.

Mrs Brennan won the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat partnership award for her collaborative work with a south-west languages cluster.

Mrs Brennan meets with a group of western Victorian language teachers in Hamilton once a term to share expertise.

“We focus on working together as teachers to extend knowledge across each of the schools,” she said.

“We plan together and do some professional development, which helps to make learning programs better.”

Teachers from eight different schools form the group.

Mrs Brennan said their use of a ‘professional learning communities’ model, which involves teacher collaboration for student benefit, would be used across the state to teach Indonesian.

“The model that we set up for how we work is now being emulated in different parts of the state,” she said.

“It is about how all these teachers can come together and work together to improve the outcomes for the students.”
