Hornets men continue unbeaten road

By Sean O’Connell

The Horsham Hornets men continued an unbeaten start to their 2023-24 Country Basketball League south-west conference season on Saturday night, against the backdrop of a junior tournament.

With the region’s basketball prospects watching on after day two of competition in the Intersport Horsham Junior Classic, the Hornets were comfortable victors against Hamilton Hurricanes.

The match was also the sole game of the south-west conference’s round six, with the remainder of the competition scheduled a bye week.

The Hornets were able to consistently find scoring opportunities, improving on their offensive output as the game progressed.

In the first half, the home side was able to put up 45 points to the Hurricanes’ 28.

A massive 60-point second half from the Hornets provided an attacking display for spectators and made it difficult for the Hurricanes at the defensive end of the floor.

Baskets came from across the Hornets’ roster, but were once again led by Austin McKenzie, 28, and Cody Bryan, 18.

Tarkyn Benbow, Matthew Brown, Max Bryan and Matthew Lovel all chipped in with double-figure scoring returns.

Joshua Miller’s 23-point contribution for the Hurricanes was admirable in a 46-point defeat.

The Hornets men face another road trip in round seven, traveling to Portland to face the Coasters on Saturday before a Sunday trip to play Warrnambool Seahawks.

Portland is second on the ladder behind the Hornets, suffering two defeats in the same number of games played as the Horsham team.

The Hornets women have their own two-game weekend, also against Portland and Warrnambool opposition.

The Horsham women’s team sits in first place on the ladder on match ratio, having dropped one game of three played and are now tasked with five consecutive weekends of matches.

Ararat Redbacks have their own road trip on Sunday to face Terang Tornadoes, who are languishing in eighth place with one win.

The Redbacks are sixth on percentage with two wins out of five games played.
