Hornets on road to meet Seahawks

By SARAH MATTHEWS

Horsham Hornets are preparing for a big weekend of basketball action, although they are waiting to learn of Mt Gambier’s availability ahead of Sunday.

The Hornets men are due to travel to Warrnambool on Saturday night before hosting their first Country Basketball League home game of the season against the Lakers on Sunday.

Men’s coach Scott Benbow said latest South Australian border-crossing rules had created uncertainty around Mt Gambier’s ability to compete in the south-west conference.

“They forfeited at the weekend and we’re not sure if border restrictions had something to do with it,” he said.

Benbow said Hornets leaders were due to have a meeting last night, after The Weekly Advertiser went to press, to discuss latest circumstances.

“We’re definitely heading to Warrnambool on Saturday night though and we’re looking forward to it,” he said.

Both the Hornets men’s and women’s teams had a bye at the weekend after opening their seasons a fortnight ago.

The Hornets men went down to Colac by 14 points on November 28, although Benbow was pleased with his charges’ first hit-out after a hiatus.

“We’re a young side and a bit inexperienced, but we were certainly in the game, that’s for sure,” he said.

“We missed a few easy shots, which could have made the margin closer, but I think that came down to experience and the pressure they put on us.

“With COVID we haven’t played for 18 months and we missed the last season. Colac played last season and you could see the continuity.”

Benbow said Sam Breuer was unavailable on Saturday but would be able to play on Sunday if the game went ahead.

The Lady Hornets will also hit the road on Saturday, taking on Warrnambool Mermaids at 7.30pm.

The Hornets are looking for back-to-back wins after triumphing over Terang by 52 points in round one.

The women’s match will follow the men’s, which tips off at 5.30pm.

If the men’s game against Mt Gambier proceeds, it will be at Horsham Basketball Stadium at 1pm.

Squad success

Several Horsham Amateur Basketball Association representative teams tasted success at their first tournament of the season, at Shepparton.

Six of eight Hornets sides made grand finals, with the association walking away with four wins.

Winners included the under-18 boys, under-16 girls, under-16 boys and under-12 girls, all in division-two deciders. Runners-up were, division one, under-14 boys and division two, under-12 boys.

The division-one under-18 girls finished fourth in their pool, while the division-two under-14 girls finished second in their pool.

Three Hornets squads will head to a tournament in Hamilton at the weekend.
