Horsham Rockers celebrate 25th anniversary

Following the postponement of a dance planned for June, Horsham Rockers members were finally able to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary in style at the weekend.

President Wayne Lang said the event went off without a hitch, with about 50 people taking to the floor at Horsham Table Tennis Association in Kalkee Road.

“We had to postpone our event back in June because COVID was back, which was disappointing, but December 4 proved to be our lucky night,” he said.

“We had the Hip Katz – Heather and David – play the music and they were great.

“Charter members Ross Warrick, Denise Hobson-Warrick, Jenny Lawes, Margaret Finn and Dianne Bolwell were all present and cut the anniversary cake.”

Mr Lang said the group’s inaugural meeting was on April 16, 1996, in Horsham Masonic Hall.

“The first president was Chris Hamerston and the first secretary was Carolyn Smith,” he said.

“Charter members were Dianne Bolwell, Paul Holmes, B. King, S. King, Jenny Lawes, Barry Lawes, Margaret Finn, John Finn, Ken Wooltorton, Denise Hobson-Warrick, Ross Warrick, Robyn Watts, Brian Watts, Margaret Wild and M. Vanner.”

Mr Lang said the club would look into hosting a mid-year dance in June or July, provided it could fit in with events organised by other clubs.

“We will also be looking forward to our main dance of the year, which is always the last weekend of October, before the Melbourne Cup,” he said.

“We call it Rockin’ at the Races, it’s at Horsham Town Hall and is well supported by people from places such as South Australia, Ballarat and Colac.”
