Live music showcase at May Park

Young bands and artists including Dan Inkster, Charlotte Dahl and headliners Senocide will perform at a free live-music event at Horsham’s May Park on Friday.

Music @ May was created by Horsham Rural City Council’s Amplify committee, youth council and youth team to promote emerging performers.

The bands, from Horsham, Hamilton and Kaniva, also include Sneeze, 8TheLemon, 345, ACD’Ceased, 20 Weeds Deep and The Crooked Footpath.

Several of the artists have also participated in the council’s Jam Sandwich workshops, a program that has connected young musicians during the past two years, providing opportunities to collaborate, develop their skills and build confidence through music.

Mayor Brian Klowss said the event highlighted the important role young people play in shaping a vibrant and connected community.

“Music @ May is a fantastic example of young people creating opportunities that benefit the wider community,” he said.

“The fact local young people have planned and delivered this event makes it even more special, showcasing incredible emerging talent while demonstrating the positive contribution young people make to our community.”

Cr Rebecca Sluggett said the event reflected the creativity, passion and leadership of local young people.

“Our municipality has so many smart and talented young people,” she said.

“Events like Music @ May give them valuable opportunities to share their talents with the community while building confidence and developing new skills.

“Young people are too often underestimated and overlooked. They have so much to offer our community when they are supported to lead, connect and contribute. Hopefully it’s not too cringe for me to say it, but seeing these young artists bring the energy is ‘gonna be so hype’.”

Senocide, whose debut album drops on all streaming services on October 1, is a Horsham four-piece that has played widely this year.

Singer and guitarist Sam Kamstra said the band formed about three years ago, and with the current line-up of guitarist Tom Koenig, bassist Paddy Dales and drummer Daniel Hastings, had this year ‘started taking it seriously’.

“We’ve been playing more shows outside of Horsham and have recorded an album, so we actually started taking it seriously and we’ve noticed significant growth because of that,” he said.

Senocide’s energetic shows feature original songs with a feel of ’90s grunge with a punk twist, pop rock elements and goth inspiration.

Kamstra said the band was looking forward to playing to an all-ages home crowd.

“It’ll be fun to meet the other bands and watch them play too, it’s good to see them get opportunities as well,” he said.

“All around, it’s a great idea.”

Music @ May, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm, is a drug, vape and alcohol-free event.
