Murtoa Cup set for Saturday

People can launch into spring racing and the Wimmera country cups season at the Murtoa Cup on Saturday.

Coinciding with the Murtoa Big Weekend, the Follio Property Podcast Murtoa Cup will offer everything that country racing is renowned for – the Exquisit Fashions on the Field, live music, children’s activities including a jumping castle and face-painting and food trucks.

Cup meetings to follow after Murtoa are Hamilton and Manangatang on October 10; Avoca on October 17; Horsham on October 18; St Arnaud on October 24; Wycheproof on October 31; and Ararat on November 8.

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora announced the following clubs have received the grants to support upcoming race meetings: $20,000 for the 2026 Hamilton Cup; $17,000 for the 2026 Horsham Cup; and $7000 for the 2026 Horsham Pacing Cup at Horsham and District Harness Racing Club on November 22.

Racing Minister Anthony Carbines announced a total of more than $668,000 from the fund to support 47 regional race day events through spring.

“Labor is proud to be backing regional racing clubs to put on some of Victoria’s biggest and best race meetings this spring, driving growth and tourism in regional areas,” Mr Carbines said.

“These racing events will bring in thousands of fans from all over the state, putting money straight into the pockets of regional Victorians through local businesses and communities.”

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora said country racing brought communities together and provided an important boost for hotels, restaurants and retail businesses.

“Country racing is about so much more than what happens on the track,” she said.

“It brings people together, supports local businesses and creates a real buzz in our regional towns.”
