Philadelphia rises to Girl Guides challenge

Horsham’s Philadelphia Rowe has become one of eight Girl Guides throughout Victoria to achieve their Queen’s Guide Award this year.

The St Brigid’s College student, 18, celebrated her success with her fellow Guides and leaders at the weekend.

Philadelphia said the Queen’s Guide Award was the ‘peak achievement in Girl Guides’.

“I worked on this award for about two years,” she said.

“I’ve done many different components as a part of the achievement, I’ve written a story, I’ve made a music video and a comic strip.

“I also volunteered at a Vinnies op shop and I’ve done a lot of other things.”

The Queen’s Guide Award provides participants with an opportunity for ‘extraordinary personal development and greater self-awareness’.

Philadelphia said achieving the award was a two-year process, which involved her Guiding peers assessing her work.

Once they agreed she had challenged herself, Philadelphia then presented her Queens Guide syllabus journal to the Girl Guides of Victoria Queens Guide co-ordinator.

The co-ordinator then approved Philadelphia’s work so she could achieve her accolade.

Philadelphia said she was looking forward to receiving her formal Queen’s Guide Award at Government House in Melbourne in February.

She plans to remain as a unit helper with Horsham Guides until she moves to Melbourne next year to study animation.

“I will continue with Guides down there and hopefully become a leader,” she said.

Philadelphia joined Horsham Girl Guides in 2010 and made her ‘promise’ in 2011.

She encouraged Wimmera girls to consider joining the organisation.

“It’s a lot of fun and you make a lot of friends,” she said.

“Guiding is about learning new things, meeting new people and experiencing new experiences.”

Horsham has two Girl Guide units, one for girls aged seven to 10 and the other for girls aged 10 to 17.
