Anzac Day was observed across the country on Saturday, with services, gunfire breakfasts and wreath-laying ceremonies to remember and honour those who served in Australia’s wars.
Horsham RSL secretary and emcee of the late morning service, David Ellis said the city’s memorial at Sawyer Park bore the names of those involved in all conflicts: World War I, World War II, Korea, Borneo, Malaya, Vietnam, Bougainville, Iraq, East Timor, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
“The 463 Horsham and district souls paid the ultimate price for our freedom in those conflicts,” he said.
“Since then, thousands from this area have worn the uniform, whose name won’t be on any memorial, but their service is of no less value than any others.”
Horsham Rural City Council deputy Mayor Rebecca Sluggett said it was touching to see large crowds at both the dawn and late morning march and service.
“As we listen to the service today, I encourage you not to see names or crosses, but imagine men and women, siblings, parents, aunts, uncles and friends, really think of them standing there in uniform with us,” she said.
“Today, we reflect on the Anzacs, who are known for their bravery, mateship, perseverance, even under extreme conditions. And we definitely have to mention their propensity for being a larrikin.
“We say thank you to all who served and those who are currently serving to help preserve and protect our way of life.
“Each year, we also pay our respects and farewell the Horsham RSL members who have passed away since last Anzac Day.
“May we always remember them, and live lives worthy of their sacrifice, lest we forget.”
During the dawn service, RSL member Colin Hill and Private Chris Chau participated in the lighting of the torch, guardians of the flame ceremony.
Mr Hill said it was the first time he had taken part.
“It’s so moving – it’s probably the most moving part of the service,” he said.
