Pickering ready to lead umpires

Cameron Pickering of Horsham is AFL Wimmera Mallee’s umpiring director and head coach.

Ashley Wright is assistant coach, Frank Marklew development coach, David Thomas goal-umpire coach and Jackson Walsgott boundary-umpire and fitness coach.

AFL area manager Jason Muldoon said the leadership group shared almost 3000 games of diverse umpiring and coaching experience.

“We are very confident the team is well qualified to provide a professional service recruiting and training our umpires and liaising with clubs,” he said.

Mr Pickering paid his respect to outgoing co-coach Paul Clough and former umpires manager Howard Schier.

“They have both been ripping fellas to work closely with the past few seasons. Pleasingly, Paul has committed to continue umpiring  this season, which is fantastic. He is a highly respected and talented umpire, drawing on his lengthy playing experience,” he said.

“Recruitment has also already been strong as coaches reach out to sign up quality umpires who have missed being involved in footy – the same as anyone.

“Jackson Walsgott will also be a field umpire – fresh from trialling with the VFL umpires and also gaining experience umpiring Melbourne metro football and being exposed to high-standard coaching. 2020 SANFL development field umpire Ryan Morrow will be living in Horsham this year, multiple Bendigo and Yarra Valley grand-final umpire Patrick Van Dyk has recommitted, we’ve picked up Nicholas Ryan who officiated the KNTFL reserves grand final last season and we’re excited to have multiple senior grand-final umpire Leigh Marklew back in the fold.

“We’d like to think this is just the tip of the iceberg as many other regulars recommit or come back and developing umpires take the next step.

“Of course we are always on the lookout for more umpires with a particular focus on goal umpires at present. It really is the best seat in the house to watch this fantastic game.

“It pays well, helps you keep fit and the comradery among fellow umpires is just like any team. You’ll have a great group of coaches supporting you every step of the way, whether that be helping you on a pathway potentially to umpiring in the AFL, or just learning new skills, gaining confidence and pocket money.”

Training is in full swing with umpires meeting at Horsham City Oval netball car park Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm.
