Pressure mounting in Horsham cricket

By DEAN LAWSON

The squeeze to separate potential finalists from also-rans is underway in Horsham Cricket Association’s A Grade competition as teams attempt to gain advantage in a run to a Christmas break.

With Homers clear on top of the ladder and Noradjuha-Toolondo snapping at its heels, all other sides are under pressure to either maintain or find form.

Rupanyup-Minyip sits third, half a win ahead of Horsham Saints, while Jung Tigers, Colts, Blackheath-Dimboola and Laharum have plenty of work ahead to make up ground.

Another round of two-day games this weekend before a string of three one-day fixtures confronts teams before the break.

It is in the two-day games, with extra overs and time, where players as well as their teams can build form and work towards cementing top-four spots.

But the jigsaw remains up in the air at the moment and all games are no more or less important than others.

A contest between Rupanyup-
Minyip and Noradjuha-Toolondo at Rupanyup probably rates as match of the round with the home side desperate to make up ground after sharing points with Colts last week.

At the same time, Noradjuha-
Toolondo struck a mighty blow in staking a claim in the ladder’s top half by overwhelming Horsham Saints in a revamped one-day encounter.

A win for the Bullants this round would go a long way in the team establishing a top-four foothold.

Victory for the Blue Panthers would continue to build intrigue into the season.

Last round, a score of 9-164 proved enough for the Bullants to beat the Saints, all out for 117 in response.

Opener Justtin Combe, 39, Kent Hair, 23, and John Heard, 20, led the way with the bat for the winners before a bowling attack led by Jordan McDonald, 3-19, finished off the work.

Gary Davidson, 25, and Mark Crafter, who retired hurt on 22, were the best with the bat for the Saints.

A wet wicket put a stop to any chances of Rupanyup-Minyip and Colts playing for a result, which no doubt would make the Blue Panthers hungry for points.

Brent Hudson and Corey Morgan are coming off wicket hauls and Mark Mbofana, Tendai Maruma and Jamie Byrne will be on the hunt for runs. A clash between Laharum and Jung Tigers also looms as a fascinating battle, with the Tigers fresh from victory over Blackheath-Dimboola and the Mountain Men keen to put an outright loss to Homers behind them.

The Tigers again appear to have an eclectic mix of players with Josiah Mock and Sam Leith getting in the 40s last hit and a variety of others also spending time at the crease.

They have also had spinner Jake McLean in the wickets behind the likes of Joel Pymer, David Puls and co.

Laharum, meanwhile, ran headlong into an on-song Homers, falling well short of the mark with the bat.

The side did better with a second dig in trying to haul in a Homers score of 226 but will need to regroup under Ben Peucker, Daniel Griffiths, Josh Mahony and Mal Adams.

Colts and Horsham Saints will grapple at Cornell Park and again both sides will believe they can win. Colts has a team capable of taking major scalps but needs more players to fire.

Brad Couch, Dylan Arnott, Liam Jakobi and Nathan Koenig are all good players and with Brad Millar down the list the outfit appears solid.

Horsham Saints also has more than handy players and it might simply be getting a settled line-up to make a difference.

While the action unfolds in Cornell Park, Blackheath-Dimboola will be trying to upset Homers momentum at Dimboola.

Partnerships will be crucial for the Bulls with Chris Hauselberger showing plenty at the top of the batting list with Harry Young, Ben Cramer and Elliot Braithwaite.

Playing Homers represents the toughest challenge in Horsham cricket, especially with all-rounder Craig Britten coming off career-best figures of 8-19 and Adam Atwood, Chaminda Gamage and Jason Kannar in the runs.
