Re-appointed Trevor Albrecht plans ahead for Nhill

By Abby Walter

Trevor Albrecht is looking to build on the positives of Nhill and District Sporting Club senior football team’s 2022 season after being re-appointed coach.

Albrecht took on a coaching role after many years as a Wimmera Football League commissioner.

Albrecht said while the scores might not have converted to the board this season, the team was working towards a successful future.

“When I took over in November 2021, we didn’t have the numbers. We were getting 26 people to field two sides. Now we have about 30 on the track on Tuesdays and close to 40 on Thursdays,” he said.

“Step one was getting numbers, step two is building quality within numbers and step three is winning games.

“We think we are moving into step two now. From where they were, not having won many games in recent years, it was not going to be a quick turnaround.”

Albrecht said the team was playing a style of football centred around attacking.

“We don’t see the score on the board each week, but we have been pushing sides,” he said.

“We need a couple of stronger bodies on the list, and we can take it to some of the sides who have only beaten us in one quarter where they’ve kicked away from us.

“The team is largely made of 16 to 21-year-olds, with a couple of people in their late 20s and early 30s.

“There are some ripping players and there’s lots to like about the team.”

David Flood, former Essendon key position player, Hawthorn Hawks development coach and Vic Metro senior coach, will support Albrecht at Nhill again as assistant coach.

“I’m really lucky that David has put up his hand to travel from Melbourne. He’s a really good bloke,” Albrecht said.

“We also have a high-performance coach coming in for the pre-season and have secured a specialist ruck coach.

“We want to go into next year fitter, fast and harder.”
