Saints exact round-one tennis revenge

A round-one rematch between 2018-19 Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant grand finalists Kalkee and St Michaels did not disappoint as a new season got underway at the weekend.

The Saints exacted a small amount of revenge for their grand-final defeat at the hands of the Kees by winning a 6-73 to 6-69 thriller.

Momentum swung back and forth throughout the day, with each side claiming three singles and three doubles rubbers. Ultimately the outcome was decided in the last rubber of the day, when Saint Jess McDonald defeated Kalkee’s Anna Exell 8-3 to seal a narrow win for her side.

Horsham Lawn’s two teams – Gillespie and Thompson – both got their seasons off to great starts with big wins against Natimuk and Central Park respectively.

Lawn Gillespie’s 11-93 to 1-42 win against Natimuk was enough to put the team atop the ladder after round one, while Lawn Thompson is second after its 8-84 to 4-65 win against the Parkers.

Drung South also got a first-up win, edging out Brimpaen 7-69 to 5-64.

The Drungsters have a challenge ahead against St Michaels in round two.

Lawn Thompson will be at home against Kalkee, Natimuk will travel to Central Park and Lawn Gillespie will host Brimpaen in other matches.
