SUPPORT NETWORK: VICSES Horsham Unit controller Crystal Sanders says she is only able to volunteer her time because of the support of her partner Ben, who looks after their young children, Brody and Isabella, when she is away.

SES – ‘We’re all doing our bit’

Victoria State Emergency Service, VICSES, has launched a Your Family, Our Family campaign to celebrate families and friends who support the organisation’s volunteers.

VICSES comprises more than 5000 volunteers, with about 13,000 family members and friends supporting them each day.

VICSES Horsham Unit controller Crystal Sanders said she supported the community during emergencies while also training and leading fellow volunteers at the unit.

She is also a mother to two young children, Brody, 4, and Isabella, 2.

She said the only way she was able to balance her busy schedule was with the support of her partner Ben, who is himself a Country Fire Authority, CFA, volunteer.

“Being a VICSES volunteer has been so rewarding. I have a great team at the unit, and together we make a real difference to our community,” she said.

“I’m very lucky that I have the support of Ben, and my kids. I don’t think I would be able to continue in this role if I didn’t.

“Particularly after a tough incident involving trauma, just going home to my family and knowing I have their unspoken support and love, it makes it all worthwhile and a little easier.”

Ben said he was able to support Crystal when she was called away suddenly by picking up where she left off, from dropping the children at school and looking after them for long periods of time to having a meal ready when she got home.

“We’re very proud of Crystal. I know how demanding the role can be, but to see all the great work she is doing and the support she is providing to her community and fellow volunteers is truly commendable.

“Even if it’s hard sometimes when she has to run off, it makes it all worthwhile and us very proud to see her selflessly helping those in need.

“It’s rewarding to be able to give Crystal the support she needs because I know my support for her in turn supports the community. I guess we’re all doing our bit to help each other.”

VICSES chief operations officer Tim Wiebusch said it was vital to recognise the contributions made by volunteers’ personal support networks.

“The Your Family, Our Family campaign is so important,” he said.

“We often have opportunities to thank our fantastic volunteers for all they do.

“This is about acknowledging the tremendous support and sacrifices their family and friends make to ensure their loved one can serve the community.”
