Smoke on the Water festivities return

A jam-packed program has been unveiled for the Smoke on the Water festival this weekend.

The revamped festival will celebrate fire, food, wine, music, art and community along the banks of the Wimmera River in Horsham, with free camping available at Maydale Reserve.

A gala opening of the festival’s art and photography exhibition, featuring an art auction on Friday night, will begin festivities.

The Horsham Agricultural Society festival was previously a one-day event, but the popular welcome-to-winter festival has now expanded to feature live music, street food, smoked meats, hands-on workshops and family-friendly activities across the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Saturday will open with a sunrise walk and iPhone photography workshop, with patrons also invited to join in the Horsham parkrun.

Doors will open from noon, with people able to enjoy art activities, street food, coal catering demonstrations and tastings, and drum fires, as well as children’s play such as hut building, sandpit play, face-painting, art and marshmallow toasting.

The poultry shed will turn into a pub, while there will be live music on the outdoor stage from 6pm to 11pm.

Workshops such as Paint ’n Sip, Mosaic Art, and blacksmithing will feature throughout the day.

Festival director Luke Ladlow said festival organisers were encouraging people to ‘embrace the crisp country air with two day-to-night experiences of fire, flavour and live music’.

“As the sun sets, the atmosphere shifts. Drum fires glow, music carries into the night, and on Saturday evening the spectacular bonfire ignites – marking the moment day turns to night,” he said.

On Sunday, there will be breakfast available for campers, as well as a recovery sound bath on the riverfront where people can stop and reconnect with their nervous system by immersing themselves in a calming wellness experience. The festivities will continue from noon, with cooking, flower-arranging and wreath-making workshops also available at an extra cost.

Tickets – either for the whole weekend or for specific sessions, as well as workshop sessions – are available at https://www.trybooking.com/DCQYK.
