Steps towards raising money a walk in the park

Wimmera Peer Parkinson’s Support Group will host A Walk in the Park at Horsham on Sunday to raise money for Fight Parkinson’s, an event that was supported by more than 100 people last year.

Group member Mark Gallagher said the walk – a ‘leisurely’ 1.5-kilometres long – would be followed by a barbecue provided by the group.

“Anyone who wants to come out is welcome, whether they’re impacted by Parkinson’s or just want to be part of the community,” he said.

“Money raised for Fight Parkinson’s goes towards research and helping people with Parkinson’s live as independently and as healthily for as long as possible.”

The walk is part of World Parkinson’s month, with World Parkinson’s Day observed on April 11.

It starts at 11am at Weir Park, entry is $10 and includes a sausage sizzle; people can also donate at www.fightparkinsons.org.au or by contacting Shona Cross on 0402 863 360.

Mr Gallagher said people with Parkinson’s, their partners or carers were welcome to join Wimmera Peer Parkinson’s Support Group.

“It’s for people to have a bit more community where they feel they’re not alone and they can obviously talk about their problems freely, and with people that understand,” he said.

“About 50 Australians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every day.”
The group meets each month for alternating formal and social meets; people can call Mrs Cross for more information.
