Strong showing secures second spot for Horsham Demons

A 20-goal second quarter propelled Horsham Demons to a strong 58-41 win over Warrack Eagles to secure second spot on the Wimmera league A Grade ladder.

Playing at city oval, Horsham led at every change as goal-shooter Imogen Worthy dominated in the goal circle to shoot 40 goals for the match.

With captain Ebonie Salter out injured, Ginger Short stepped into the goal-keeper position with distinction, while Jorja Jones in wing defence also led the way for the Demons, who now have two weeks off – through a club bye and then the league bye on the King’s Birthday weekend.

For the Eagles, wing-defence Maddie Okely, and centre Emma Koschitzke were best.

Dimboola scored an eight-goal win over Nhill, who came back late in the game to close the margin.

The Roos led by 16 at the last change but only scored six goals in the fourth quarter to finish the game 51-43.

Maddison Marra and Stephanie Glover were standout players for Dimboola, while for the Tigers, Courtney Hillier and Emma Schilling were named best. Playing on their new courts at Murtoa, the Burras stayed with Stawell up until half-time when the scoreboard was at 25-23 in the Warriors’ favour.

Stawell, through goal-attack Madi Taylor and defender Lisa Considine, came out firing in the third term to stretch the margin out to nine goals before an even fourth term.

For the Burras, Johanna Griffiths and Jenna Schneider, with 22 goals, were impressive.

Ararat scored a strong 30-goal win in an away game at Beulah, defeating Southern Mallee Thunder 58-28.

Goal-attack Maggie Astbury, with 25 goals, and defender Demi Bligh were the stars for the Rats who shot out to a 20-4 lead by quarter-time.

The Thunder couldn’t make a real impression on the scoreboard, but were kept in the game through the performances of wing-defence Taya Horman and centre Lilly Puckle.

In round seven action, Dimboola host Minyip-Murtoa, Stawell face a tough task in Horsham Saints coming off a bye, Nhill travel to Ararat, while Warrack Eagles play the Thunder.
