Students showcase culinary skills for Mother's Day high tea

Horsham Holy Trinity Lutheran College year nine ‘Café 3:16’ students put their learning into practice on Friday, hosting a ‘high tea’ for the school community while also raising money for Breast Cancer Foundation. 

Students prepared food, made coffees and served friends and family at the Mother’s Day celebration.

Food technology teacher Amanda Przibilla said the purpose of the event was to raise money for Breast Cancer Foundation and for students to gain experience in event planning.

“This provided the opportunity for students to plan, design, prepare, cook and build their customer service skills,” she said.

“The students were required to work together as a team. 

“Our other year nine ‘Christian Living’ elective students collected donations from businesses to raffle at the event.”

Mrs Przibilla said the event was also a chance for students to put into practice what they had learned weekly.
“In the weeks leading up to this event the students used their class time to brainstorm and research menu ideas, trial and taste test recipes, create a plan and theme for the day and allocate jobs and roles,” she said. 

Mrs Przibilla said the class was fortunate to run the special event annually for Mother’s Day.

She said it was usually well received by parents and friends of the school community. 

“We offered an array of delicious petit fours, freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches and savoury treats,” she said.

“We also served cups of tea, barista made coffee and sparkling fruit punch.

“In terms of fundraising for the Breast Cancer Foundation, $5 from every high tea ticket was donated to the foundation, as well as the money made from the raffle, which was more than $350.”

Mrs Przibilla said the café elective was semester run and provided the opportunity for students to join half way through the year, or continue on from first semester. 

“The students implement a variety of skills such as safe food handling, menu planning, catering, creating shopping lists and budgets and customer service,” she said. 

“Students learn to work together co-operatively as a team. 

“The purpose of this elective is to provide students and staff with a varied menu each Thursday. 

“Students also have the opportunity to order hot chocolates and staff can order barista made coffees throughout the year. 

“We provide café style food and students also get the opportunity to cater for small events such as a school council dinner or special events like grandparents day or prep transition days.”
