Top tennis sides go head to head

By SARAH MATTHEWS

All eyes will be on St Michaels and Kalkee on Saturday as two of this season’s top Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant teams go head to head in game of the round.

The Kees are undefeated on top of the ladder, with the Saints trailing by four points in third place.

The Kees overpowered Central Park last week, enjoying a six-set triumph after getting off to a strong start.

Jeff Friberg and Steve Schultz were again an impressive partnership, defeating Lance Avdyugin and Matt Jones 8-4.

Avdyugin returned to the winners list in his singles encounter, defeating Friberg 8-0, however Schultz overpowered Jones 8-2.

Brendan Nitschke also enjoyed a good day, winning two of his three sets.

He had Grant Schultz on the ropes at one stage in their singles showdown before Schultz pulled away to win 8-5.

Kalkee’s women led the way, with Anna Exell, Melissa Beddison and Emily Polack winning all their encounters for the day, although Central Park’s Blair Penrose forced Polack into a tiebreaker.

Central Park will be chasing a closer result when it travels to take on Drung South Purple this week.

The Purple outfit found the going tough against Horsham Lawn last week, with second-placed Lawn claiming the spoils 10-89 to 2-57.

Drung’s number one man Dylan Emmerson featured in his side’s two set wins, partnering with Aaron Jennings to secure their opening rubber 8-6 over Jae McGrath and Graeme Wood.

Emmerson went on to defeat McGrath in their singles rubber, 8-3.

The rest of the results fell in Lawn’s favour, with Tahlia Thompson’s singles win among the highlights.

The up-and-comer defeated experienced opponent Kate-Lyn Perkin 8-4 to finish the day on a high.

Thompson also continued her solid partnership with Cherie Wood from last season, with the pair enjoying an 8-2 doubles victory.

Drung South Orange snared four sets against higher-ranked opponent St Michaels on Friday night.

Youngster Logan Casey featured in two of his side’s four winning sets, claiming his doubles set with Matt Hill before accounting for Ian Nitschke 8-5 in singles.

Angela Nitschke again impressed for the Saints, winning three sets.

Drung South Orange will not find the going any easier this week, up against Horsham Lawn at Lawn.

Results: St Michaels 8-77 d Drung South Orange 4-61, Horsham Lawn 10-89 to Drung South Purple 2-57, Kalkee 9-76 d Central Park 3-56.
