Wimmera football heavyweights ready to clash

There will be plenty of interest in Wimmera league round-four senior football games on Saturday – particularly with two games featuring likely finals sides this season.

Southern Mallee Thunder will host Stawell at Jeparit, and Horsham Saints travel to Davis Park to take on Nhill in two matches that will attract plenty of interest.

The Thunder, coming off a 10-point win over the Saints, will take on the undefeated Stawell, who scored a strong 101-39 point win over Horsham Demons.

Shepparton recruit Edward Lindon was named the Thunder’s best, along with brothers Matty and Billy Lloyd, and ruckman Kieran Delahunty, in a match where Saints led for three quarters.

A purple patch by the Thunder early in the fourth term saw last year’s grand finalists hit the front at the 12-minute mark, when the last goal of the match was scored.

The final 20 minutes of the match were peppered with points as neither side stamped their authority on the scoreboard.

Will Brennan, Sam Clyne and Will Tickner were best for the Saints, who now turn their attention to Nhill, who are coming off a 43-point win over Minyip-Murtoa.

The Tigers got off to a sleepy start at Minyip, held to just one point for the quarter, but with Tom Wheaton, Lachlan Gill and Lucas Dahlenburg the standouts, were able to get their game back on track to boot five goals in the second term and take a 16-point advantage into half-time.

A 7-3 goal second half put the game beyond doubt for the Tigers, who will be a tough task for the Saints this week.

In the other two matches of round four, the Demons, despite lacking fire-power against Stawell, will go into the game against Dimboola this Saturday as favourites.

The Roos struggled with their own goal-scoring opportunities at the weekend, going down to Warrack Eagles 16-180.

The Eagles piled on 27 goals – with South Australian recruits Nic Lehman and Connor McFadyen kicking seven apiece while former VFL ruckman John Jorgensen kicked six.

But Warrack’s task this weekend will be polar opposite to last round – the Eagles take on reigning premier Ararat, fresh off a bye.

The Rats, with a 1-1 win-loss record so far in 2026, will be keen to put their stamp on this year’s season.
