Wimmera Pride Project treasurer Patrick Quaine said International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia, IDAHoBIT, on May 17, remained significant given comments from West Wimmera Shire Council mayor Bruce Meyer about sexual and gender-diverse people.
“The best example of why this international annual day remains so important is because of comments made on radio by the West Wimmera mayor. There are plenty of people saying those things not on the radio, without an apology, without realisation why those words were hurtful,” he said.
Under the amended flag policy, community flagpoles will be established at Edenhope, Kaniva, Apsley, Goroke, and Harrow.
Non-official flags can be flown on the community flagpoles upon request from the community and approved by Council.
The rainbow/pride flag is considered a non-official flag.
By Council resolution, Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout was authorised to establish the community flagpoles.
“We have had the opportunity to conduct site inspections in Edenhope and Kaniva and have identified sites for the establishment of community flagpoles which will be ready to use on the 17th,” he said.
“At Edenhope the community flagpole will be at the Edenhope and District Community Centre, and at Kaniva, the community flagpole will be outside the Windmill café and visitor information centre.”
“Both locations are very prominent and are located in each town’s main street.”
