Three days of Nell Smithett women’s golf

The biggest week on Horsham Golf Club’s women’s calendar kicked off yesterday with the first of three events in the 50th anniversary of the Nell Smithett Memorial Trophy.

About 60 women from the club participated in a four-ball aggregate Stableford competition.

Competition will continue tomorrow with a Stableford event starting at 10.30am.

Women will also compete in a concurrent Blue Wren Trophy competition in drawn teams of three, with women not discovering who is in their team until after play has concluded.

The club already has more than 100 entries for the competition from across the Wimmera and beyond.

The week will conclude with a competition for the Nell Smithett Memorial Trophy on Friday.

The trophy is 50 years old after being contested every year since 1970, and recognises the achievements of former club champion Nell Smithett.

Smithett won women’s club championships in 1964-67 and was also Wimmera champion in 1965. The format of the competition is stroke play, with the best three scores counting from teams of four.

More than 120 women from across the region and as far as Melbourne and South Australia have already signed up for the Friday competition, beating last year’s field of 98 entries.

For more information on the tournament, people can call Horsham Golf Club on 5382 1652.
